Why A Pilates Reformer Will Benefit You
By Chris Channing

Serious pilates enthusiasts typically purchase a reformer machine that aides in the flow of your pilates moves. Those who are experts or intermediate users of pilates will benefit from these. Pilates puts great emphasis on breathing and contractions of individual muscles, and reformers help with that.

Pilates was created in the early 1900s, but has received a popularity boom since the late 90s. Madonna reportedly does pilates daily, as well as many other famous celebrities. It has been proven to greatly enhance ones body and mental state. Stress reduction is a big plus, because with less stress you will become a happier and more efficient being.

Reformer’s are great machines for those that are serious about their pilates hobby. They look complicated, but with brief instruction they are fairly easy to use. Some upscale fitness clubs may provide these to their visitors, but it is not likely for all other fitness clubs. If you are indeed confused as to how you should use a reformer machine, ask someone to show you. Some companies will offer a free demonstration.

Buying a reformer is a pretty large purchase. They usually cost over $800, and high quality ones can cost as much as $2,000. Working out with a Pilates reformer is different from using other machines, or using the floor as your “machine”. With a reformer you get better balance, form, and technique. All of which are crucial elements for the Pilates workout.

There are many types of a pilates reformer machine. Some are custom made to hold heavy weights and to include specific additions. There is a reformer machine available for almost any type of person. A beginner, an expert, an intermediate user, someone who is doing physical therapy, and even elderly people.

Pilates reformer machines have so many benefits associated with their usage. Since many machines and even classes for pilates work few muscle groups, a reformer will allow you to work every muscle in your entire body if you choose to do so. This gives you a complete 360 workout, as well as total muscle definition and tone. Your core, and back will become stronger, and you will become more balanced, and less stressed.

Closing Comments

Pilates reformers combines everything from pilates and other muscle toning exercises, and puts them into a machine that allows you to perform those moves successfully and with proper form involved. Pilates reformers are important for all users that are serious about Pilates.

How Pilates Benefits The Body And The Mind
By Judy Smith

Pilates is not only a work out method it is a way to control your mind, body and spirit. The use of focused breathing and attention paid to the muscle groups builds the ability to focus the mind away from problems. Many people find themselves ill due to stress and lack of exercise. Pilates answers both of these problems.

Pilates exercise not only unites body and mind but it gives you discipline. This in turn will protect your health and well being. Stress brings many chemical changes to your body. It increases the blood flow to the larger muscles and slows digestion as it prepares the body for the fight or flight syndrome. Blood vessels restrict and sugar goes up. Many hormones are switched into off position. This is good if there is a danger, your adrenalin rushes to fight it off or get away as fast as you can. Today most stress does not come from a life threatening danger, but the activities of modern society. These activities may put you in fight or flight mode, but there is nowhere to run from the stress of everyday life.

Stress related diseases send people to the doctor. Estimates of seventy-five to ninety percent of all visits are stress related. It slows healing and most of all prevents wellness. Wellness is not the opposite of illness. It is more than just the lack of sickness; it is an overall well-being that affects both the mental and the physical aspects of life. Many adverse habits develop because of stress and lack of wellness.

The use of focus in Pilates develops the mind to a point that it stops the cycle of worry and stress. Much like any exercise for the mind that allows the individual more control of thought patterns, Pilates offers a way to change your focus and relieve the stress.

The exercise from Pilates releases the body from the flight or fight mode by mimicking the activity of both. Exercise is a proven method of stress control, when combined with the activity of mental control and focus on breathing, the quick return of stress is unlikely and the cycle is broken for that period.

It is no surprise that studies link a reduction of disease with exercise. A study at the University of Calgary and the University of Ottowa showed a decrease in blood sugar when patients with type two diabetics exercised. The decrease translated into a reduction of heart attack and diabetic kidney and eye disease. Other studies show a reduction of 40 percent in mortality rate for diabetics. Lack of activity is one of the biggest risk factors in heart disease. Being overweight is another. Pilates reduces both risks and is a heart healthy activity. Stress is also linked to tumor growth in cancer victims. While there is no study that shows psychological stress creates cancer, there are many that shows it impairs the immune system and creates an environment conducive to cancer.

It seems pretty simple. Take a Pilates course, work out three times a week, live not only longer but also better. The activity is good for the body, the training is good for the soul and the results on appearance are fantastic for the spirit. Devote a small portion of time to exercise and regain hours in healthy stress-free living. You’ll find that the day’s stresses melt away and you feel better than you ever felt before, after just a few months of training.

The “hundreds” is one of the most common Pilates exercises around the globe. This Pilates exercise primarily focuses on the abdominals.

I don’t usually give these Pilates abdominal exercises, not until I am certain that the person or client is strong enough to do these exercises.

Pilates is classified under body and mind category so for every exercise you do, you have to switch on first the mind then the body and not the other way around.

If you are an instructor and who would like to give these exercises to your class, how are you going to deliver it?

Hundreds is in flexion so usually people tend to over use the rectus abdominis or the “six pack”( the first abdominal muscle) by bulging it out. In Pilates, we don’t usually use this muscle because it is not supporting your back.

Connecting those while doing the pilates exercises is not easy. Expanding or opening and closing the ribs is already an exercise for them.We eventually ignore that movement as we grow up and use the belly or chest
and shoulders when we breath. Even the direction on where to expand your ribs is another thing. How do you control it if you want lateral expansion and not on the anterior part?. People will simply arch their back, letting their thoracic spine out of the natural alignment. It takes a lot of time, practice and a skillful teacher to give sense on this exercise.

This is a very stressful movement and a lot of muscles will take part even though it is not necessary.

These few (control, Isolation, precision, coordination), play an important role of the pilates movement. If you don’t apply this principles then you end up not getting the benefits of the pilates method.

It varies if the majority of the class have a fatigue posture.

Combining the breathing with the movement, connecting the core and addressing the body as one unitis one of the goals to achieve full benefits of the pilates mat work exercises.

Buying the right exercise equipment is easy, as long as you know what it is you need. Here is a quick guide on getting the right exercise equipment.

Sometimes going to the gym is just not convenient. We have to work, take care of the kids and do the many chores that require us to live in a modern world. Unfortunately today’s busy lifestyle can really take a toll on your health. We all know that we need to take the time to exercise but where do we actually find that time? A solution is to purchase exercise equipment for your home.

There are a few things to consider when you think of purchasing exercise equipment. How often are you going to use it? Do you have space in your home? What kind of exercises do you like to do? Should you purchase used or new? Do you want to buy equipment with a specific body area in mind?

Are you Really Going to Use the Equipment?

The market for used exercise equipment is huge. The reason is not typically because people want to upgrade their equipment, but because they bought something that they had no intention of using in the first place. If you are not a runner, then perhaps you would not like a treadmill, despite it being the most popular piece of exercise equipment you can buy. Maybe you would be more comfortable with an elliptical machine instead.

How many times have you been seduced by those info commercials showing hot bodies working out with fancy machines? It takes a long time to look as good as the models. The equipment is not going to magically transform you into a bodybuilder. You have to use the exercise equipment consistently to create a healthy body. So make sure before you spend the money that you actually expect to use the equipment.

Decide what Type of Exercise You Like

Many people buy exercise equipment thinking that they would like to get involved in the activity without ever really participating in it. It seems as though the first piece of exercise equipment purchased is a treadmill. Now, if you do not like to go outside for a walk or running is not your thing, there should be serious doubts that you would enjoy it any better inside your home. However, if you always enjoyed lifting weights at the gym, then you know you would benefit from having a high quality bench and a few choice dumb bells in your home.

Make Sure You Have the Space

Before you run out and buy a couple of exercise machines you probably want to map out where you intend to put it in your home. Exercise equipment can look relatively small in huge gyms, but the same piece of equipment in your little upstairs bedroom can dominate the room. There are many pieces of equipment made nowadays that can fold up into smaller units perfect for closet storage or fit in unused corner areas.

Buying New or Used

There are so many pieces of quality exercise equipment for sale used and cheap that it is difficult to recommend that you buy them new. The only reason to buy new is if you could not find the exact piece that you really want. Convenience in purchasing a new one also comes into play, but with this convenience comes a high cost. There are numerous quality second hand stores that sell used equipment. Also it is a good idea to comb through the classifieds in the paper and see if anyone is selling good equipment.

What Part of the Body to Concentrate On?

You might consider what body parts you are most interested in working out with home exercise equipment. Maybe you only want something that can help tone your abdominal muscles. Or perhaps you are not getting enough legwork and want equipment to build those muscles. Of course, there is also exercise equipment that can work out the entire body. The idea is to consider your goals and what you want to accomplish with the exercise equipment and then make your purchase.

Exercise equipment can be a time saver for those people who want a workout but cannot make it to the gym. There are many types of equipment available so choosing the right one will ensure that it will actually be used. Exercise equipment can make you healthier but only if you use it and do not relegate it to the junk pile.

Joining a fitness center is a big decision, mainly because of the cost involved. If you are like most people, you want to get the best value for your money. A lot of fitness centers will want you to sign contracts. These contracts may be very hard to get out of, so it is important that you are happy with the fitness center that you choose. This information will give you a few tips on how to choose the best fitness center for you.

The first thing to consider is what kind of workouts you want. Do you want to swim, do aerobics, weight train or have access to classes like Karate or Pilates? Once you decide on the type of workouts that you want, the next step is to look around. Do some research. Compare the fitness centers in your area to see what is available to you. The following is a list of things to consider when choosing a fitness center.

+ Check the overall cleanliness of the equipment and the exercise areas. Ask the staff what measures are taken to disinfect equipment between uses. Diseases and fungal infection can be spread very easily on poorly disinfected surfaces.

+ How far is the fitness center from your home and your workplace? If it is clear across town, what are the odds that you will go often?

+ Take a tour of the facility during the times that you are likely to use it yourself. This will give you a good idea of the crowd that will be there.

+ Most places will give you a free pass to try out the facility. Take advantage of this and talk with the other members to get their feedback.

+ Check with your employer to see if you can receive a discount to a fitness center. Occasionally, health insurance companies will provide a discount also.

+ Another important point; know exactly what is in your contract before you sign it. Read it carefully and if you do not understand something, have someone on staff explain it to you.

What are the benefits of joining a fitness center compared to just working out at home? A fitness center will give you access to many different types of exercise equipment and should have professionals on hand to help you use it. There are also a variety of exercise programs you can join for a more structured weight loss plan. A very important point is that if you are paying for something, you are more likely to use it. Joining with a friend can even be a greater motivator. It is always more fun to workout with someone else, than by yourself.

The decision to join a fitness center is totally up to you. But if you are serious about wanting to get in shape and lose weight, it can be a good decision.

Today we will talk abut Body Core Conditioning Through Body Core Exercises.

Just how important are body core exercises? You rely on your body to get get out of bed, to lift your children, to perform your job and to take you places everyday. If you appreciate what your body does for you, you will provide it with nutritious food, hydrate with water and be sure to add some activity into your day.

While our limbs provide mobility, reach and strength it is our body core that provides the basis of each movement. Sedentary lives can cause our body core muscles to weaken and become subject to strain or injury. Even if you workout or participate in sports you may not be working the body core muscles you rely on to perform.

WHAT IS MY BODY ‘CORE’?

Your body core is the midsection of your body, from your groin to your shoulders. The core includes the pelvis, abs, back and chest muscles. It is this core that offers stability, balance and flexibility. Every movement you make originates in the core - whether you are reaching for your toothbrush or running a marathon. If the core is not properly conditioned it will limit your physical abilities.

Working the muscles in your body core will improve the effectiveness of movements in your limbs. Most exercise routines focus on building muscle. By creating a stable, strong base for those muscles you can optimize the strength and flexibility of each limb.

HOW DO I STRENGTHEN MY BODY CORE?

There are many exercise routines and products that work the muscles of the body core. Professional trainers create customized routines to enhance an athlete’s abilities by developing the proper core muscles. However, there are also many programs developed for individuals who wish to incorporate it into their fitness routine or to begin one.

The exercises and products developed to strengthen your body core do so by creating resistance or instability so that the core muscles must respond to maintain balance. The exercises are gentle on the body but are intense and beginners will quickly ‘feel’ the muscles being used. Proper alignment is key so having a trainer to check your position will help identify the safest and most effective way to perform an exercise.

Body core exercises often imitate moves that we employ in daily life or sports and thus train the body to rely on the core and reduce the strain we put on our limbs. Two popular forms of exercise that develop core body strength are Pilates and the Swiss ball.

Pilates uses the body as its own form of resistance. Learning to breath properly and perform slow, controlled movements allows a person to isolate and strengthen core muscles.

The Swiss ball (also known as a Fitness ball) is an easy and fun way to strengthen the body core. While there are many exercises that can be performed with the Swiss ball, simply sitting on it will create the instability needed to engage the core muscles to maintain balance.

Good core strength is important at every age and fitness level. Whatever your goals, find a way to incorporate body core conditioning into your routine to reduce fatigue, avoid muscle strain and improve your strength and mobility.

Pilates is an exercise program that helps to strengthen and get a person more flexible in sophisticated but easy to do movements. Mostly Pilates exercises can be accomplished with just a mat and a determination to get fit. However Pilates allows you to do many advanced exercises that you could not otherwise do without one.

Pilates typically does not require the use of weights or sophisticated gym equipment. That is what makes it so popular with many people. You can do a Pilates routine in the comfort of your home or you can join a fitness gym to practice with an instructor. In many advanced classes or DVDs that you might use at home the use of a Pilates ball will eventually come into play.

The Pilates ball makes the exercises you perform a bit more advanced and possibly more difficult. However, that is a good thing as it will strengthen your core with more focus than if you did not have a Pilates ball.

The Pilates ball is chosen based on your height and weight. You do not want the ball to be over inflated. The fitness gyms will typically have the Pilates ball set at the correct inflation but if you are using one at home it will be easy to put too much air in it. Make sure to read the manufacturer’s instruction for inflation.

The Pilates ball makes your moves more difficult and advanced. The instability of the ball during the exercise makes your core do more work than if you were not using one. Other exercises can be made easier if you are doing exercises where you place your legs on the ball for support.

For some floor exercises many find the floor too hard. The same exercise or variation can be performed on the Pilates ball which cuts down on the discomfort. It can also work out your entire body causing the least discomfort or damage to your muscles and particularly those in your back. When performing an exercise right on the Pilates ball you are likely to see a double effect of your performance as it focuses more toward your core.

The Pilates ball has interesting uses other than exercises as well. Many people use it as a stool to sit on. The instability of the ball as you sit on it forces your core muscles to work when otherwise they may not. Simply sitting in a chair relaxes your muscles and sometimes encourages people to slump. You will find that the Pilates ball will help you develop good posture.

A Pilates ball makes a wonderful exercise tool. It can enhance your exercises to strengthen your core as well as support you on to other exercises to make your movements more comfortable.

Want great looking abs? Want to build stronger stomach muscles? Try Pilates exercises that target this area.

Most people want to look their best, especially during the warmer spring/summer months where most people dress on the lighter side. To look your best, many people focus on strengthening and tightening up their stomach muscles. If you look even a little bit, you can find many stomach muscle exercises to consider for your exercise program. So which exercises would be best for you?

There are a couple of things to consider before choosing the actual exercise program to strengthen and shape your midsection. The first thing is you need to do is pick a program you are really willing to complete and stick with, since no exercise program will have any benefit long term of you don’t keep it up. The second thing to consider is to choose a set of exercises that work all the various muscles groups that form the abdomen from the obliques to the upper and lower abdominal muscles.

Stomach crunches have always been a popular and effective stomach exercise. Regular crunches work the front stomach muscles while side crunches work the obliques. Crunches are not perfect though, and for some can cause back and neck strain.

A crunch-less crunch exercise is a lower abdominal core exercise where the intent is pull the lower abdominal muscles at the belly button inward toward your spine and hold for 10 seconds. This really works those lower muscles that you probably did not even know where there. This type of exercise is done while kneeling or when lying on your stomach. This exercise also eliminates the back and neck strain you may get with a normal crunch.

A long arm crunch involves lying on your back and with knees bent and feet flat. Put your arms straight back as if to reach over your head and then contract your stomach muscles slowly and lift your arms head and shoulders off the floor to about a 30 degree angle. Hold this position for a few seconds and then slowly go back to your original position. Rinse and repeat for a set.

The hip lift involves lying on your back with arms at your sides and palms up. Then lift your legs straight to about a 90 degree angle to your torso and hold. Now contract your lower abdominal muscles at your belly button to your spine. At the same time, lift your hips off the floor to a height of 2-3 inches and hold there, your legs still being held straight upward. after a few seconds lower your hips back to the floor and then repeat the cycle for a set.

Another good stomach muscle exercise involves laying flat on your stomach with legs straight and arms extended above your head. Now, raise your body up with hands clasped together as if you were doing a push-up. Hold this position for as long as you can stand it and repeat as desired. This exercise strengthens your whole stomach.

The Pilates workout offers a good stomach muscles exercise because each Pilate exercise focuses on strengthening the core of the body otherwise know as your stomach muscles. Almost every movement in Pilates will work the stomach muscles directly or indirectly so Pilates is a good choice to consider.

There are other stomach muscle exercises out there not mentioned here that are good as well like the vertical leg crunch and the torso twist. If you are serious about working and strengthening your abdominal muscles you will find it advantageous to try several different stomach muscle exercises to find which ones work best for you.

Pilates is one of the most popular ways to fitness, but to truly make the most of your Pilates exercises, you need the right Pilates Exercise Equipment to help you get into shape.

Step inside any health and fitness club and you will quickly notice that Pilates classes are always filled to capacity. Pilates is a favorite fitness program for strengthening and developing balance within the mid-section of the body, otherwise known as the “core”.

Pilates can be performed without the need for complicated pieces of equipment. However, there are certain items; Pilates equipment, that can make the exercises more comfortable and can help your body get more out of the exercises. Here is a list of Pilates equipment that you need.

Pilates Mat

The Pilates mat really only helps with one thing; a hard exercise floor. Most of the Pilates exercises involve the participant stretching and performing strength exercises while laying down, kneeling or sitting. Having a non-slip Pilates mat will increase comfort and allow the time to be spent concentrating on the exercise rather than the pain that is shooting into your back as a result of the cold, hard floor. A quality Pilates mat will be durable, can be rolled for travel and storage and can be washed when needed.

Pilates Ball

A Pilates ball can also be used for comfort when performing the exercises. Certainly many of the movements can be done while sitting on the ball which seems to be much better than simply sitting on the hard gym floor. However, it should not be presumed that this will be easy as a separate benefit of the ball is it forces the participant to control their balance as they are performing the exercises. This allows your body, and particularly your core, to gain the maximum benefit from the exercise.

Pilates Machine

The reformer is a Pilates machine that, while looking extremely complicated, is actually a very elegant machine that allows the participant to work the core with basic yet precise movements. The reformer consists of a sliding platform with springs connected to a spring bar that allows the participant to vary the resistance. The sliding platform or carriage is where the participant will sit, kneel, lay or stand as they perform the exercises. The carriage moves up and back as they push on the footbar. There is a headrest and shoulder block that is used to keep the participant steady within the machine.

Pilates is an exercise program that focuses on strengthening the core muscles group. Pilates exercise equipment enhances the exercises and makes the routine more comfortable. This allows the participant to get the most out of the program and enjoy better health.

So go get your Pilates equipment now and start reaping the benefits of Pilates.
